Keijo Virtanen (Kheta Hotem, Free Players, Rambling Boys) makes his long distance walk into the stream of folk/countryblues continuum. These marvellously rusty and dusty tracks have been cooking with tender flame in Keijo’s mind&soul for a good while: “When I was just a little boy, I used to just lay down under the blanket (just before falling to sleep) randomly switching the channels of our transistor radio. Under the crunches and washes I also found the new pirate radio stations and there, among the speeches came out the echoing, rhythmic, electric guitar music. Eventually under rock music and British pop music I discovered the sounds of the black people of North America. I felt like those deep singing voices and wailing guitars would somehow also belong to this kind of environment, to rural, middle-of-nowhere Finland, surrounded by wildlife and physical work with our own hands and whatever we may get grown from the land.

“Outcast Tribes” is hot on the outside and freezing-cold in the middle. It’s like No-Neck Blues Band, Parson Sound, a more-organic Raccoo-oo-oon and Avarus in a swirling Russian blizzard, sparring with rusty strings instruments they cobbled from metal wire and two-by-fours.

Get Off The Coast:

They shamble in a slow rise, spontaneously creating some perverse funeral march, each voice possessed by what the band’s label calls a sort of “eskimo disco”.

There’s tension in the air and the birds are quiet. The day is dull, life is still. Haunting cassette hiss fills the room. Outside, the children are screaming in agony but muffled whispers are all that comes out. Was that your first lover’s voice? Another flashback from unremembered youth? There’s a fire crackling in the old castle and ghosts dance in the ballroom. The premise of Preslav Literary School’s music is precisely this: distorting the lines between the haunting and the beatific, confusing the listener about the nature of his music, the intentions behind the lengthy sounds contained within the cassette, the deconstruction of the line between the benevolent and the malevolent. Preslav Literary School makes music to get lost in, and he wants the listener to get lost in both universes at once; in an almost fetishistic way he wants the listener to be blissful about his sonic discomfort. Brilliant.

Cellos made out of goat skulls await for the right hour to come while a devilish Amazon gives orders to her slaves. A crowd of gnomes commit mass suicide. Freak mutants make attemps to play funeral folk but their ugly paws barely hit the right chords. Yet there’s some hidden order in all this chaos. The listener will find the Italian collective in an unusual shape. Somehow, the industrial noise walls have disapperead; there are more acoustic instruments. Crooked improv. Very dreamlike, ornate in its execution and full of depth, Gengras’ compositions contain just a few elements, unspooling slowly but surely. It’s amazing how subtle the mood shifts are, almost like stepping back from a 3D picture and suddently seeing new, darker, danker angles entrenched in the apparatus. Tones rise and surrender in a bubbling pool of cool digital liquid and keyboard sparkle.

“There is a natural progression to things, an organic or unforced way for an organism to grow, and it is in this natural way we find ourselves riding. After years of playing and recording together as Loud & Sad, we now have a great geographic distance between us that makes this process impossible on any sort of regular schedule. While there is still much to share from those years and the years ahead, the dawn chorus tape you hold here is the first new organism to grow out of this whale fall… the slow change in Loud & Sad that signaled the start of new lives. An almost collaboration on a shared concept… a sharing of life together despite distance… a continued exploration of music done together and apart… a realization of the connections people have and should not sever… an effort at being transparent in concept and true in spirit.

On the reversed-pyramid-side of this tape you will find Banana Pill, a young Russian-Finnish family residing in Helsinki. You kind of know what to expect already, right? Their drones are fragile and nostalgic. Layered melodic pieces, cascading synth patterns, violin and guitar and a little bit of delayed pizzicato grooving. A purest emotion shining though the sound. As simple and as cool as that. The lone French psych-head Calypso Borealis is occupying the paper-plane-side. Kindest, softest, yet murky as mist compositions bring the coolest evening sofa experiences. Chilling mix of synths, field recordings, kalimba – one can only guess what else.
