“Asleep at the wheel… Mixtape” is a collection of original music from the powerful large-scale installation which took place at Milton Keynes International Festival 2010. Imagine a ghost road of cars in a darkened highway, illuminated only by hazard lights crossing an abandoned supermarket interior. You are a passenger in the back seat. You can’t see through the misty windows and your only guide is the abstract soundscape from the car radio… Side A presents a series crackling daydream episodes. Some of the pieces are so short and smooth one barely notices them, like passing small objects on high speed with your floor to the metal. The compositions come as mysterious drenched distant calls and lullabies. Tiny fragments of hypnotic foundsound meet lush melodies emerging like memories from the past, otherworldly hymns and dew-like hiss. Side B’s “Wonderland” is a 20 minute uplifting piece that ponders life’s biggest and most abstract paradigms, bringing an air of revelation, discovery and rebirth with its shimmering sonic patterns and multi-layered trance-inducing sonorities. “Asleep at the wheel…” is a highly emotional adventure through your subconscious, a conversation with yourself in a dream-like state. The cassette is ideal for your glovebox, or walkman while roaming the streets.

Woodpecker Wooliams is the guise of Brighton, UK singer-songwriter Gemma Williams. Her songs are a vast universe where art overcomes doom. Drawing together various influences: medieval folk, chamber pop, drone, field recordings – she sounds very fresh yet familiarly close to heart. A gently plucked harp and a powerful voice, rich witty lyrics and outbursts of small noises and samples / weirdo effects. She couldn’t care less for comparisons with Cocorosie and Joanna Newsom because she’s taking her own way, revolving around the revisited English folk traditions. Gemma has a couple of European tours behind her back, as well as one in Russia, a dozen of collaborations and is now finishing her second full-length album. Thus Full of Nothing are re-releasing her previous EP “Patryoska” which was originally out in criminal edition of 36 CD-Rs on stunning Italian imprint Wool Shop Productions. Her songs, mostly comprised only of a harp and her enchanted yet firm, confident voice, enriched with some subtle field recordings (sometimes simply made up of background noises caught on tape during the recording process itself), are restrained yet stunning pieces of experimental folk, evoking images of a long-gone English countryside full of mysteries and fairytales.

The record is strange, elusive, and haunting. And it all revolves around Williams’ enchanting atmospherics and her surreal voice, that at times sounds like a distant calling to one’s doom, or the proffered hand given in rescue.

Lichen Gumbo is a rock’n'roll duo from unmapped rural Finland, where mystical muddy swamps and aurora borealis lit skylines mix with low signal sitcoms from overseas. No time for mumbo jumbo, just straight forward shredding here. These songs are about existential longing for god forsaken roadhouses and weird bohemian parties. Lichen Gumbo is the sound of blasting through the dusty roads of Savo with Pappa-Tunturi. Recorded with dictaphones, tape decks, a reel to reel machine and an mp3 player bought from Lidl. It’s pretty far out, and certainly lo-fi, but there’s a real spark of creative genius buried beneath the dirt that should keep you hooked for multiple listens.

Imperfect Masters is the duo of Robert Horton and Dan Plonsey. While his frequent collaborator Plonsey plays the clarinet Horton himself occupies his self-made string instrument called “boot”. Robert’s odyssey goes back to 2005: numerous CD-Rs and tapes on such labels as Gold Soundz and Digitalis, collaborative CDs with Tom Carter and Yellow Swans on Important… However, this cassette dedicated to El Cerrito is a very strong statement of American free and poor improv folk. Or as perceived by the artist:

well, here we are in this humanly mess – me and dan plonsey surveying canyon trail park under a crescent moon – when we see petty doggerel coming down the trail – he has his bagpipes – he gets to the pond and begins to charm the frogs. plonsey grabs his clarinet of magic and horton the celestial boot – and we start jamming under the bamboo w/the doggerel and the frogs – the frogs who had been dying out all over the world and for sure dying in el cerrito – till the frogman came and uh silted the concrete – cause you know the city paves the ponds and streams to keep them clean. and frogman, barn-owl-who-confronts-the-daylight, the 4 teenage red tail hawks, petty doggerel, steve, anna, eve and daisy, horton and plonsey and the frisbee gang we don’t like this none – so we charm the place, and the shadows and highlights come alive. peter’s ghost takes on substance as we play another creepy melody in this the final hour, as we contemplate our mortality, happiness, and lack of money.

Long may we praise Finnish underground scene! Banana Pill may not be the most well-known band around but they are hard “music workers” indeed. After all the shows they book in Helsinki and the tiresome-lovely hand-made packaging for tapes on the band’s Jozik label – all Sasha and Dmitri can do is chill out. Banana Pill’s compositions may seem fragile but in fact each is a fortress of calm. This is herbal music.
