Two drone swordsmen from America and Russia join forces on this cassette release to bring some altered beats to whatever is going on in the new noise.
Brad Rose‘s body of work includes excellent releases under The North Sea cloak, as well as industrial noise damage of Ajilvsga and blurred pop brilliance of Altar Eagle, among others. Being the boss of Digitalis Brad had introduced the world to hundreds of records that melted minds, including quite a few of his own compositions. Charlatan‘s previous releases were mostly filled with lucid synth moves and slow drum pulses, varying from chill instrumental electronica to tongue-in-cheek frenetic twists. The new material is a transition release for Charlatan – kind of shedding the old skin and trying on the new one (that will then lead to the “Isolatarium” LP). One’s in for delicious heavy synth throbs, skipping arpeggios and techno wabi-sabi.
Dmitriy Vlasov has been a dark knight of the new Russian experimentalism with his Billiam Wutler Yea over-the-top digital rituals, later to return to Clathrus guise and explore the possibility of keeping it intricate and make the material more accessible. His “Aloof Out Rwanda” cassette on, you may’ve guessed, Digitalis Limited was such a strong statement Dmitriy needed to cement it with Brad Rose. Sad-eyes downtempo slopes overlap mutant dub explorations, assembled with a traditional stamp of Russian melancholy.

Over the course of three tracks apiece, they respectively converge on a mutant, frayed sort of hazardous electronics, with Charlatan delving into blunted techno primitivism reminding of Prostitutes on ‘Grotesque Social Grid’, and diffuse, fluid abstraction in ‘Retrovirus’, whilst Clathrus’ tracks wallow in a sort of bleak Russian melancholy with more decayed dub aesthetics, with highlight in the industrial lurch of ‘Zond’.
Charlatan’s side sounding like a stack of analog synthesizers suddenly acquiring self-awareness and starting to work on its own, creating seemingly random, abrasive looping structures that still bear traces of its noise beginnings in its rough edges and occasional sandpaper-like -in-texture drones… Clathrus snakes his way between abstract hip-hop and laboratory electronica, which makes him one of the most interesting and surprising artists on the Russian label.
The EP progresses like a well-paced, spaced out X-Files episode.
Как чистое отрицание «ничто» удерживается только в языке. На кассетах лейбла «Full of Nothing» оно воплощается экспериментом над реальностью, двигающим шумовую музыку к новым высотам. Совместный релиз двух рыцарей дрона добавляет в новый нойз витиеватые биты и мечты о будущем тысячилетии.
В своем не очевидном упорстве, они достигают очевидной высоты, с которой шум кажется уже не просто вышколенным рычагом влияния на сознание, но водопадом совершенных, выкристаллизовавшихся звуковых норм. Удивительно, но именно эта кассетка зарывается и нагло требует места на пантеоне музыкальных манифестов. Отведем же ей оное.
